André Onana will miss Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Guinea on Monday. Onana announced that he will play the Premier League match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at 5.30pm.
Manchester United and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) are negotiating a date of arrival in Ivory Coast for Onan, who has already postponed his trip to take part in Monday’s FA Cup match between Manchester United and Wigan Athletic (2-0 win by the Red Devils).
He will miss the Group C game between Cameroon and Guinea, but is expected to travel for the Indomitable Lions’ games against Senegal (January 19) and Gambia (January 23).
Onana, 27, left Cameroon after a row with coach Rigobert Songo during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but returned after reconciliation talks between the two men.
However, he retired from international football when he joined United from Inter Milan in July and his potential absence of up to four weeks, depending on Cameroon’s progress, was a blow to the English club.
This is why Cameroon were flexible in their approach to the goalkeeper’s arrival and offered him some room to manoeuvre.
«We are talking to the Cameroonian federation, it was an issue in the discussions with André when he arrived here (from Inter Milan in July),” United manager Erik Ten Hag told reporters.
